Position Overview

We are seeking a passionate and skilled IBDP Music Teacher to join our arts department. The successful candidate will deliver outstanding IB Music instruction to senior students, inspire musical excellence, and prepare students for IB Diploma Programme Music examinations while fostering a love for music and cultural appreciation.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning:

  • Teach IBDP Music at Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL)

  • Deliver engaging lessons covering music theory, history, composition, and performance

  • Prepare students for IB Music internal assessments and external examinations

  • Guide students in creating, performing, and analyzing music

  • Integrate diverse musical traditions and cultures into curriculum

  • Use technology and digital tools for music creation and analysis

  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and skill levels

IB-Specific Duties:

  • Guide students through IB Music assessment components (Exploring Music in Context, Experimenting with Music, Presenting Music, Starting Points)

  • Support students in developing musical inquiry and research skills

  • Ensure compliance with IB assessment criteria and academic honesty

  • Attend IB workshops and professional development

  • Stay current with IB Music curriculum updates and best practices

Performance & Ensemble Direction:

  • Direct school ensembles (orchestra, band, choir, or other groups)

  • Organize school concerts, recitals, and musical performances

  • Provide individual and group instrumental/vocal instruction

  • Support students in developing performance skills and confidence

  • Organize participation in music festivals and competitions

  • Collaborate with other arts departments on interdisciplinary performances

Assessment & Evaluation:

  • Design formative and summative assessments aligned with IB criteria

  • Provide timely, constructive feedback on student work

  • Monitor and track student progress toward IB achievement

  • Prepare students for IB examinations with proven success strategies

  • Maintain accurate records of student achievement and attendance

  • Moderate internal assessments according to IB standards

Student Support:

  • Mentor students in developing musical skills and artistic expression

  • Support students with university applications for music programmes

  • Guide students in music career pathways

  • Provide additional support for students requiring assistance

  • Encourage participation in CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) music projects

  • Foster a positive, inclusive learning environment

Facilities & Equipment Management:

  • Maintain music rooms, practice spaces, and performance areas

  • Manage musical instruments, equipment, and technology

  • Ensure proper care and maintenance of school instruments

  • Supervise proper use of music technology and recording equipment

  • Maintain inventory of music resources and supplies

Professional Collaboration:

  • Participate in departmental meetings and collaborative planning

  • Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects

  • Engage in IB professional development and training

  • Communicate effectively with parents regarding student progress

  • Contribute to school events, concerts, and cultural activities

Qualifications & Requirements

Essential:

  • Bachelor's degree in Music, Music Education, or related field

  • Valid teaching certification/license from home country

  • Minimum 2 years of teaching experience, preferably in international schools

  • Experience teaching IBDP Music (HL and/or SL)

  • Strong knowledge of IB Music curriculum, assessment, and philosophy

  • Proficiency in music theory, history, and composition

  • Performance skills on at least one instrument or voice

  • Experience directing ensembles and organizing performances

  • Excellent English communication skills (native or near-native)

  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills

  • Passion for music education and student development

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in Music or Music Education

  • IB Category 1, 2, or 3 training certification in Music

  • Experience as an IB examiner or workshop leader

  • Proficiency in music technology and software (Sibelius, Finale, GarageBand, Logic, etc.)

  • Experience with world music and diverse musical traditions

  • Experience in international schools in Asia/China

  • Additional skills in composition, conducting, or music production

  • Familiarity with Chinese culture and educational context

  • Salary: 20,000 - 25,000 RMB/month (after tax - excellent net salary)
